Liza Jones gave a talk on the history of underwear via Zoom. She had many interesting visual aids which brought back many memories for some of the audience.
Liza began by taking us back to ancient Egypt and the wearing of loin clothes, through time to the very early origins of something resembling a bra in the fifteenth century and its evolution over the centuries right up until the 1994 launch of the Wonderbra!
We learnt where the term "knickers" came from, how Victorian ladies showed of their large bottoms! Many members remembered Artex fabric which was used in their PE kits but was first used in the 1880s.
Liza also spoke of the impact of wars on the underwear women wore - the envelope chemise in the Great War, and utility knickers (or passion killers) during the Second World War.
From Edwardian times fancy underwear became acceptable, dyes brought new colours and fashion influenced styles through the 1900s - as dresses got shorter, underwear needed to get smaller.
Who knows where the industry will go next!
